September:

September is Senior Care Health Month.

You may wonder, "When is my pet considered a senior?" At AVH six years of age is considered senior for both feline and canine patients. Most of our pet friends are still in the prime of life at six years but this is when problems can arise involving vital organ systems. Early detection of problems allow early intervention to ensure your pet's health and longevity.

We recommend that your pet be examined every six months instead of once a year. More frequent examination increases the chance of detecting a problem early. We also suggest an Early Detection Blood and Urine Panel. These lab tests allow the veterinarian to monitor the function of your pet's vital organ systems.

Six years of age is a good time to re-evaluate your pet's diet. An age specific diet best meets your pet's specific nutritional needs. Some foods have additives that support joint health and even enhance brain function.

We hope this information is helpful as you consider the health care needs of your senior pet. Please call us with questions or to schedule your pet's exam today. (610)863-7111
